Using Vitamin C to Treat the Symptoms of Dermatographic Urticaria

Okay, this story is really amazing and really true! It has to do with my husband and a skin condition that came on suddenly and had no answers from doctors other than drugging him up with Allegra and Zyrtec to treat his symptoms. What did he have you might be wondering? He was diagnosed as having dematographic urticaria... aka, dermographism, dermatographism, or "skin writing" describes it best. When his skin is touched, rubbed, slapped, scratched (even lightly) it becomes raised and red. You can really write on his skin! Fun party trick, sure... annoying, yes. He could even do nothing, not even be touched and he would get a red splotch on his face that looked like he had been slapped or something. It was itchy and stinging for him. The doctor told him they don't know why it comes on or how long it will last. There was no cure and they could only give him Allegra (then later Allegra combined with Zyrtec) to treat this symptoms. We moved to a new state and hoped that maybe environmental factors or lack of a certain allergen might make him better with no luck. We started juicing hoping better diet would help, nothing helped. We had kind of just resigned ourselves to the fact that he was going to have this skin condition for who knows how long... maybe forever.

He had already been living with this for about 3 1/2 years when we just happened upon the documentary "Food Matters" on Netflix and there is one point in the film where Andrew Saul talks about vitamin deficiencies and I saw a look of clarity and as Oprah (love her) would say a "light bulb moment" on his face as he realized his symptoms being listed before him on the screen... make a long story a bit less long, I immediately ordered the book Doctor Yourself: Natural Healing That Works by Andrew Saul. My husband followed the Vitamin C Therapy (I believe that's what it was called, I have it loaned out to a friend) that Saul talks about in the book. Basically, my husband's dermatographic urticaria had two underlying causes: His body releasing too much histamine and he had a vitamin C deficiency. Vitamin C is a natural antihistamine that is created by the body and consumed in foods.

This vitamin C deficiency was most likely caused by stress. Stress created adrenaline; adrenaline utilized the vitamin C in his body and created a deficiency. So he started the Vitamin C therapy that Saul outlines in his book. He basically keeps taking certain amounts at time intervals of like 10 minutes until he reaches bowel tolerance (yes, an explosive experience). Once he knows his bowl tolerance level, he backs off to the dose right before bowel tolerance, and this was the dose he started taking daily. For him, this was taking 20, yes 20! 1000mg tablets of vitamin C a day. After he started taking 20 a day, within the first 2 days, he knew he would be able to stay off of his Allegra and Zyrtec. He was getting the same symptom relief from the vitamin C as the doses of Allegra (360mg) and Zyrtec (20mg) he was taking daily. Now 6 months later, he is still completely off Allgera and Zyrtec and only needs to take 5 1000mg tablets of Vitamin C to control his symptoms for the entire day. He has noticed that if he drinks more than 1 cup of coffee a day or more than 3 alcoholic beverages a day (beer) than he might need to up his dosage. He still gets the "skin writing" but the itchiness, flair ups without touch, blotchiness, prickly flushing, and burning are gone. The cool party trick is gone.

I just can't believe that doctors either don't know this or don't want us to know this. Why would anyone want to be taking drugs when you can take vitamin C. And it is inexpensive by the way!

If you are worried about taking that much Vitamin C, it is a water soluble vitamin and the only side effect of taking too much (not that it will hurt you) is lots of pooping! while side effects of Allegra include rashes, itching, swelling, and trouble breathing! Zyrtec's side effects include vision problems, dizziness, tremors, and a fast pounding heart! I don't know about you but I'd rather have an eruption from Mount Bootie rather than have trouble breathing, blurred vision, and a flip flopping heart! Read Doctor Yourself: Natural Healing That Works by Andrew Saul for more information about the safety of vitamin C. I highly recommend this book! The therapy will most likely work for many other types of allergies (other than food) as it is a natural antihistamine.

Miraculous how the body can take care of itself when given the nutrients it needs isn't it!
